Raising Children in the Light of God’s Truth
As parents and caregivers, we’re entrusted with the sacred responsibility of guiding children in the knowledge and love of God. This divine mandate is rooted in Scripture (Deut. 6:6-7; Ps. 78:1-8), and one of the most effective ways to fulfill it is by teaching theology. Theology is not just a dry, academic exercise; it’s a vibrant, life-changing pursuit that helps children understand God’s Word and its relevance to their daily lives.
From infancy, children begin to form a matrix of meaning about the world around them. As they grow, this framework shapes their interactions and assessments of every experience. By teaching theology from a young age, we nurture the development of a biblical worldview, guiding them towards a life oriented to God and motivated by His salvific mission.
But teaching theology to children can be challenging. We must avoid making it dull and boring, instead using creative and engaging methods to communicate abstract truths in concrete ways. We must also remember the “so what” factor – helping children understand how theology applies to their lives and informs their decisions.
In a world surrounded by diverse belief systems, it’s crucial to ground children in a rich theological understanding of the Christian faith. This will enable them to stand firm against false doctrines and cultivate a deep confidence in their beliefs. By raising theologically robust children, we’re ensuring their future stability and protecting them from being tossed about by every wind of doctrine.
Teaching kids theology shapes their character and will as they discover the nature of God and seek to develop godly characteristics. It informs how they live in the world, correlating their actions with their beliefs. Ultimately, theology should lead to doxology – a heart that thanks, praises, and worships the living God.
By prioritizing theology in our children’s education, we’re not only fulfilling our biblical mandate but also raising a generation of young people who will live for God’s glory and bring light to a world in need.
