The Art of Pausing: A Refreshing Break from the Whirlwind
As we navigated the crisp winter air in a park north of New York City, our minds and bodies craved a warm respite. After parking, we strolled towards the town center, where a cozy tea room beckoned us with its inviting atmosphere. The extensive menu boasted an impressive array of teas and delectable treats, promising a much-needed reprieve from the chill. As we savored our chosen brews, our tension visibly dissipated.
A Daughter’s Lament
My daughter, a high school teacher, sighed wistfully, “Why can’t I indulge in this daily?” Her packed schedule, filled with responsibilities and relationships, left little room for relaxation. Yet, it’s not the beverage itself that’s essential, but the act of pausing. For followers of Jesus, stopping is vital – halting the relentless pace of activities, responsibilities, and even well-intentioned ministry.
Jesus’ Example
We find inspiration in Jesus’ own habits. He frequently withdrew from the crowds, leaving behind their pressing needs, to recharge. He even distanced himself from his disciples, to whom He would soon entrust the Kingdom. We must emulate His example. When will you carve out time for your own “cup of tea” today?
A Prayer for Stillness
Lord, I confess that stopping feels unproductive, a hindrance to progress. Yet, I know that I’ll only hear Your whispers if I pause. Please remind me that stillness is not a luxury, but a necessity. Help me to prioritize these moments of quiet reflection, that I may truly hear what You have to say to me.
