Discovering Your True Self in Christ
As students, we often hear warnings about the harsh realities of the “real world.” But what if we’ve been misinformed? What if the true essence of life isn’t found in graduation or independence, but in our connection with Jesus Christ?
From Fantasy to Reality
Until we experience life through the lens of faith, we’re merely sending postcards from a fantasy existence. It’s only when we mature in our relationship with Jesus that we begin to uncover our authentic selves, as intended by God from the beginning of time.
The Onion Effect
Thomas Merton, a renowned monk, likened life to an onion, with God gradually peeling away the layers to reveal our true nature. This process can be painful, but it’s essential for growth. As Jeremiah 45:5 reminds us, God may bring adversity into our lives to strip away the superficial layers that conceal our real selves.
Stripped Bare, Clothed in Jesus
In times of disaster, we’re forced to shed our ego, self-centeredness, and worldly desires. What’s left is our genuine self, clothed in Jesus’ righteousness (Colossians 3:4). This is where we discover a life filled with purpose, aligned with God’s heart and mind.
Abundant Life Awaits
In this authentic life, we enter into the abundant existence promised by Jesus (John 10:10). It’s a life where we’re free to flourish, unencumbered by the weights of our former selves.
Embracing Your True Identity
So, don’t be fooled by the notion that graduation or independence marks the beginning of “real life.” Instead, recognize that your true life begins when you connect with Jesus through the Holy Spirit. It’s then that you’ll start to uncover your authentic self, and experience the abundance of life that God has in store for you.
