Leading with Humility and Heart

**The Heart of Leadership: Servanthood and Stewardship**

As we reflect on the qualities of effective leaders, we’re reminded of David, the shepherd-king who ruled Israel with an upright heart and skillful hand. Like Moses before him, David learned the art of shepherding from his experiences tending literal sheep, and later applied those principles to caring for his people. This biblical model of leadership emphasizes the importance of protecting, guiding, and serving others with faithfulness and integrity.

In contrast, the prophet Ezekiel lamented the greed and neglect of Israel’s leaders, who prioritized their own interests over the well-being of their people. But Ezekiel also looked forward to a future when God would raise up a servant-leader, the Messiah, who would shepherd his people with perfect wisdom and care. This promise was fulfilled in Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who laid down his life for his sheep and calls us to follow his example of humble servanthood.

As we consider our own roles as leaders and influencers, we’re reminded that true greatness is not about seeking power or prestige, but about serving others with humility and love. Jesus taught his disciples that whoever would be great among them must be their servant, even as he came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

In a similar vein, Paul encouraged believers to think of themselves with sober judgment, recognizing their unique gifts and responsibilities within the body of Christ. He urged them to use their gifts in proportion to their faith, whether in prophecy, service, teaching, exhortation, or acts of mercy, and to do so with generosity, zeal, and cheerfulness.

As we strive to lead and serve others, let us remember that we are stewards of the resources and opportunities entrusted to us. We will be held accountable for how we use our gifts, talents, and influence to build up the body of Christ and advance his kingdom. May we be faithful servants, humble leaders, and wise stewards, using our lives to glorify God and bless others.
