Beyond Fleeting Pleasure: Finding Eternal Happiness in God

The Elusive Pursuit of Happiness

When it comes to happiness, we often think of it as the ultimate goal. We’re told to “take life easy; eat, drink and be happy” (Luke 12:19), but is this fleeting pleasure truly what we’re searching for?

A Deeper Longing

The actress who said, “We’ll stay together as long as we’re happy,” raises a crucial question: Can happiness withstand life’s challenges? Can it endure the sleepless nights, the struggles, and the heartaches? The answer lies in understanding the difference between short-term happiness and eternal, abundant life.

A Higher Purpose

Jesus taught that “happy are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). This hunger and thirst for righteousness is what sets us apart from merely seeking fleeting pleasure. It’s a longing for something more, something that transcends the ups and downs of life.

The True Desire of Our Hearts

Do we come to God seeking what He can give us, or are we willing to commit to the long haul, trusting in His promise to never leave or forsake us? Are we ready to walk with Him through life’s fires and storms, knowing that He loves us completely?

A Prayer for Guidance

God, teach me to focus on the true desires and needs of my heart. Help me to increasingly trust all to You, even when happiness seems elusive. Amen.

Further Reflection

Take a moment to reflect on your pursuit of happiness. Is it rooted in short-term pleasure or eternal, abundant life? What would it look like to hunger and thirst for righteousness in your daily life?
