The Unlikely Promise of Trouble
We’ve been sold a bill of goods, convinced that a comfortable life is the norm for Christians. But what about Jesus’ words, “In the world you will have trouble”? They hardly seem like a blessing, do they? Instead, they’re often met with shock and dismay when illness strikes, natural disasters hit, or our children stray.
A Stormy Ride
I’m fascinated by the story of Jesus inviting his disciples onto a boat, only to fall asleep as a fierce storm rages on. Why did they doubt his purpose in the midst of the chaos? Jesus’ response to their fear speaks volumes: “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” These seasoned fishermen knew that storms on the Sea of Galilee were nothing new. Did they really think that with Jesus on board, they’d be exempt from trouble?
The Illusion of a Storm-Free Life
We often fall into the same trap. We think that if we’re obedient, moral, and involved in ministry, we’ll be spared from life’s upheavals. But Jesus’ own life is proof that storms will come, regardless of our good deeds. The good news is that he provides everything we need to not just survive but thrive in those difficult times.
A Glorious Promise
Jesus’ unlikely promise of trouble is followed by words that bring hope and comfort: “Take heart! I have overcome the world.” Translators use various phrases to convey Jesus’ message, including “Take courage,” “Cheer up,” and “Have confidence.” Each one requires action on our part – we must trust him to calm the storms.
Facing Our Fears
Jesus’ question, “Why are you so afraid?” is one we should ask ourselves regularly. What are we really afraid of? Where do those fears come from? When we identify our fears, we can release them to God, who promises to overcome them. As we do, we’ll begin to anticipate those fears and ward them off by trusting in him.
A Prayer for Courage
Father, I’m often afraid of what might happen, of people, and of my own thoughts. Help me to release those fears to you and trust that you’ve overcome them. Help me to anticipate and prepare for the storms of life, knowing that you’re always with me, guiding me to the other side.
