A Safe Haven in Times of Need
Growing up, my home was more than just a place to rest my head – it was a sanctuary for my neighbor, Kelly. After school, she’d wait for me to arrive, seeking refuge from the turmoil that awaited her at her own home. The verbal abuse, rowdy friends, and alcoholism that plagued her family life made my small, noisy house a beacon of safety.
Summer Nights and Flashlight Tag
During those long summer days, Kelly would linger, and we’d play Flashlight Tag in my backyard, oblivious to the parties and music drifting from her house. But on one rainy day, the doorbell rang, and I found Kelly shivering, coatless, and tearful, fleeing her mother’s latest drunken outburst. My mom enveloped her in a warm embrace, reassuring her that the brokenness of her family wasn’t her fault.
The Power of Small Acts
In today’s fast-paced, anxiety-ridden world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by our daily responsibilities. Yet, offering a helping hand or a listening ear doesn’t have to lead to emotional exhaustion. Sometimes, all someone needs is someone to share a devotional with, grab lunch together, or simply extend an invitation to come over – just like Kelly did.
A Lesson from Zacchaeus
In Luke 19, Jesus triggers a profound transformation in Zacchaeus, not through a elaborate campaign or strategic plan, but through a simple, initial conversation. This encounter shows Zacchaeus that he can break free from the isolation of his past and find his way to grace. The lost can find their way, Jesus teaches us.
Continuing the Ministry of Shelter
Years later, Kelly continues to pay it forward, providing a safe haven for two foster children, siblings removed from their own troubled home. Through small acts of love – baking cookies, sharing bedtime snuggles – she demonstrates the kind of love God has given us.
Starting Small
How will you start small today? Take a moment to reflect on the needs around you and respond to God’s direction. Pray with me: “Lord, thank you for giving us the chance to serve you through helping others. Help us to see needs and respond to your direction.”
