Finding Strength in the Darkest of Times

For Howard Rutledge, being a prisoner of war in Vietnam was a transformative experience. Despite the unimaginable hardships he faced, he discovered a profound sense of purpose and faith. In his own words, “After twenty-eight days of torture, I could remember I had children but not how many. I prayed for strength.” It was in these moments of desperation that Rutledge found solace in his spirituality.

The Power of Reflection

The long periods of enforced reflection during his imprisonment allowed Rutledge to re-evaluate his priorities. He realized that his hunger for spiritual nourishment far surpassed his physical needs. This newfound understanding brought him a sense of peace and clarity, even in the midst of chaos. As he so eloquently put it, “My hunger for spiritual food soon outdid my hunger for steak.”

God’s Presence in Our Lives

Rutledge’s story serves as a powerful reminder that God is always at work in our lives, even when we’re not aware of it. Philippians 1:6 reminds us that God “does not relish in our sufferings, but He delights in our development.” This assurance gives us the strength to persevere, even in the face of adversity.

A Message of Hope

No one promised that life would be easy or painless. But with faith, we can trust that God will use our struggles for good. He is constantly working to help us grow and become the best version of ourselves. As Max Lucado so aptly puts it, “God is doing what is best for us, training us to live His holy best. Rest in this assurance…you will get through this!”
