When Storms Rage On
Imagine being trapped in a desperate situation, exhausted, frustrated, and fearing for your life. This is exactly what Jesus’ disciples faced when he sent them across the Sea of Galilee to Bethsaida. The headwind was impossible, the seas were angry, and they had been rowing for eight hours. It’s a wonder they didn’t give up.
But here’s the intriguing part: they weren’t in this predicament because of disobedience, arrogance, or poor judgment. They were there because they had obeyed Jesus. So, why would Jesus deliberately put his disciples in harm’s way?
The answer lies in Jesus’ response to their distress. As he walks across the turbulent sea, two profound truths emerge. Firstly, Jesus is no ordinary human being – he is the Lord God Almighty. Secondly, his intention goes beyond mere rescue; he wants to transform the men in the midst of the turmoil. He’s not just concerned with their circumstances, but with their very understanding of themselves and their lives.
As Jesus approaches the boat, he utters a phrase that echoes through eternity: “It is I. Do not be afraid.” In that moment, he takes on one of God’s sacred names, affirming that the “I am” – the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – is with them. This declaration shatters the illusion of isolation, reminding them that their existence is infused with the grace and glory of the divine.
So, why does Jesus sometimes lead us into the eye of the storm? It’s because, in those moments, we’re forced to confront our limitations and discover the true source of peace. Real peace isn’t found in the absence of turmoil, but in the presence, power, and grace of the Savior. This peace is ours to claim, even when life’s storms push us beyond our natural abilities, wisdom, and strength.
In the midst of chaos, we can live with hope and courage, knowing we’re never alone. The “I am” inhabits every situation, relationship, and location by his grace. He is in us, with us, for us, and our hope.
