A Mother’s Concern: The Avalanche of Emotional Upheaval
As I reflect on your childhood, I’m reminded of the many times my heart skipped a beat. From your early adventures, like walking into the street without looking, to learning to ride a bike, and even losing a toenail in Ottawa, I was always on edge, worried about your safety. But as you grew and mastered new skills, my fears subsided. I realized that my love and concern for you were rooted in a desire to protect you from harm.
The New Fears
However, a new fear has taken hold of me. Your current emotional turmoil is like navigating an avalanche – unpredictable, overwhelming, and exhausting. The constant changes, from Bobbie altering the terms of separation to your struggles with loneliness and the sale of your home, have created a perfect storm of stress. I know you’re doing your best to cope, but it’s like being on high alert all the time, and that’s draining.
A Personal Connection
My fear is deeply personal. I grew up with parents who struggled with alcoholism, and I know firsthand the trauma it can cause. I’ve seen the Jekyll and Hyde dynamic, where a loved one’s behavior changes drastically under the influence. The memories of those experiences still haunt me – the feeling of helplessness, the destructive behavior, and the long-term damage it inflicted on my brothers and me.
Wisdom from the Bible
As someone who respects the Bible, I want to remind you of its wisdom regarding alcohol consumption. While it doesn’t prohibit drinking, it does offer guidance on overindulgence. Proverbs 20:1 warns that wine can be a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. Proverbs 23:19-21 cautions that overindulgence can lead to poverty and rags. Ephesians 5:18-21 urges us not to be controlled by wine, but instead, to be filled with the Spirit. And 1 Peter 5:8 reminds us to be sober-minded, lest we become vulnerable to spiritual attacks.
A Plea, Not a Demand
I’m not asking you to stop drinking altogether. I’m imploring you to be mindful of the dangers of excessive drinking, which can exacerbate your emotional, mental, and physical struggles. I want to support you in finding healthier ways to cope with the avalanche of challenges you’re facing.
