Unwrapping the True Meaning of Christmas
As we gather around the tree, surrounded by loved ones and festive decorations, it’s essential to remember the real reason we celebrate Christmas. It’s not about the birth of our country, the start of a new year, or even the antics of a furry groundhog. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
A Family Tree Like No Other
Matthew’s account of Christmas begins with a lengthy list of names, known as a genealogy. This family tree is more than just a collection of names; it’s a reminder that Jesus was a real person from a real family. But why is it essential to understand Jesus’ family roots? For one, it highlights his connection to Abraham, to whom God made a promise in Genesis 12. How do you think Jesus fulfilled that promise? Additionally, Jesus is referred to as the son of David, to whom God made a promise in 2 Samuel 7. How did Jesus fulfill that promise?
A Story of Imperfect People
As we delve into Jesus’ family tree, we discover a cast of characters with tough-to-pronounce names. But what’s remarkable is that not all of them were perfect followers of God’s ways. What does this tell us about God’s plan? It reveals that God can use anyone, regardless of their flaws, to fulfill his purposes.
The Angel’s Announcement and the Holy Spirit’s Role
In Matthew’s account, we learn about the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary and the crucial role the Holy Spirit played in Jesus’ birth. We also see Joseph’s obedience to the angel’s instructions in a dream. What are the two names given to the baby born to Mary? Why is Jesus called “Immanuel”?
The Promised Savior
Throughout the Old Testament, we’ve seen God’s promises to Eve, Abraham, and David. Jesus is the fulfillment of those promises – the great King who brings all nations under God’s forever rule. He is Immanuel, God with us, born of the virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit. Jesus came to save his people from their sins, and that includes us!
A Prayer of Gratitude
Father in heaven, we thank you for Christmas, for baby Jesus, and for your presence with us. What a wonderful gift! Amen.
