The Power of Self-Reflection
Have you ever stopped to think about what drives you, what motivates you, and what you truly desire? Jesus did just that with two of John’s disciples, asking them a simple yet profound question: “What do you want?” (John 1:37). These men were likely well-versed in the old prophecies and eagerly awaited the coming of the Messiah. Yet, despite their religious background, they still needed to examine their hearts and motives.
The Importance of Introspection
Jesus’ question was not a casual inquiry. It was an invitation to look deeper, to explore the depths of their souls. These two men knew they needed more than a brief conversation by the roadside. They required a quiet, uninterrupted space to reveal their deepest longings and hear Jesus’ responses. Similarly, God poses the same question to each of us, urging us to retreat into a secluded time and place to hear His answers.
A Heartfelt Response
Their response may seem unusual to us, but it highlights the importance of introspection. They needed to confront their own desires, fears, and aspirations. We, too, must create space to listen to our hearts and hear God’s gentle whispers. As we quiet our minds and focus on our inner selves, we may discover that our deepest longings cannot be satisfied by fleeting pleasures or superficial conversations.
A Prayer for Clarity
Lord, I often find myself uncertain about what I truly want. My heart is filled with longings, but I struggle to articulate them. Thank you for your Spirit, who gently probes my soul, asking, “What do you really want?” And then, you welcome me into your presence, where I can find peace, clarity, and direction.
Embracing the Journey
Jesus’ question is an invitation to embark on a journey of self-discovery, to explore the depths of our hearts, and to discover what truly drives us. As we navigate this path, we may uncover desires, fears, and aspirations we never knew existed. But with God’s guidance, we can find clarity, purpose, and fulfillment. Will you take the first step today, and ask yourself, “What do you want?”
