Finding Hope in the Darkest Places
When we hit rock bottom, it’s a brutal reality check. But here’s the amazing thing: it’s exactly where we can discover hope, and it’s where Jesus meets us with open arms.
The Power of Rock Bottom
Rock bottom isn’t where we planned to end up, but it’s where we often find ourselves. And it’s here that we realize we’re not alone. Jesus is here, and so are his friends – people who have been through the trenches and come out the other side. It’s a place where great things can finally start to happen, thanks to Jesus and his gospel of grace.
Getting Closer to God
Before we can start feeling hopeful again, we need to get closer to God. He’s the source of our hope, and without him, life can feel meaningless. But with him, we can face whatever comes our way and come out on top. We’ll even find joy again.
Where Can We Find God?
In Isaiah 57:15, we’re told that God dwells in two places: in the high and holy place, and with those who are humble and contrite. We may not be able to reach his lofty dwelling place above, but we can find him in the humble place below, where the broken and devastated are being revived by his grace.
The Beauty of Rock Bottom
Rock bottom may not be where we want to be, but it’s where God loves to work. It’s where his grace is reviving broken people, and where they’re coming alive again. It’s a place of hope, of excitement, of new beginnings.
Leaving the “Mushy Middle” Behind
We often strive for a life that’s comfortable, convenient, and prestigious – what we might call the “mushy middle.” But the problem is, it can be harder to find God in this place. He’s present, of course, but the distractions and ease of life can make it easier to marginalize him. It’s better to be down at rock bottom, where God is near and his arms are wide open.
What Happens at Rock Bottom?
Two things happen when we’re at rock bottom. First, God revives us – he gives us fresh strength, helps us stand tall again, and makes us feel alive. And second, we discover a new community of people who are also broken and contrite. These are people who are relaxed, honest, open, gentle, and fun. They’re people who will have your back, and you’ll have theirs.
A New Reality
Our part in all this is to accept a new reality – that life isn’t about living in the “mushy middle,” but about living in the midst of God’s grace and love. It’s a sobering realization, but it’s also a liberating one. So let’s take our next step, and see what God has in store for us.
