The True Meaning of Authority and Submission
At its core, the concept of authority and submission is simple: there is a God, and we are not Him. As creatures created in His image, we are called to reflect His character and represent Him in the world. This fundamental truth is often distorted by Satan’s lies, which promise that we can become like God by rejecting His rule.
The Lie of Autonomy
Satan’s deception is convincing, and we often fall prey to the idea that true freedom and authority come from casting off God’s law and rule. But this is a false promise. In reality, God desires us to exercise authority and rule, but only as we submit to Him and His law. This submission is what allows us to reach our full humanity and grow into positions of authority.
The Problem of Fallen Rule
One of the main reasons we struggle with authority and submission is that we see so many examples of fallen, abusive rule in the world. This can lead us to be suspicious of authority in general, and to reject the idea of submission altogether. However, this is a mistake. Authority and submission are beautiful things when done under God, and they are essential to human flourishing.
The Path to True Authority
So what is the solution? First, we must confess that our own hearts are prone to misuse authority, and that we need to repent of our sins and follow after Christ. We must learn to use the authority God has given us in a way that reflects Jesus’ example of servant-leadership. This means embracing humility, forgiveness, and patience, even in the face of bad authority.
The Importance of Godly Authority
Jonathan Leeman, author of Authority: How Godly Rule Protects the Vulnerable, Strengthens Communities, and Promotes Human Flourishing, emphasizes the importance of godly authority in our lives. As Christians, we are called to submit to God’s authority, and to exercise authority in a way that reflects His character. This is not always easy, but it is essential to living out our faith in a way that honors God.
Living Under God’s Authority
Ultimately, the key to true authority and submission is recognizing that God is the one with ultimate rule. As we submit to Him and His law, we are able to exercise authority in a way that is beautiful, life-giving, and reflective of His character. This is the path to true human flourishing, and it is the only way to experience the fullness of life that God intends for us.
