Assessing the Heart: A Journey of Self-Reflection and Spiritual Growth

The State of Our Hearts: A True Accounting

As we navigate the complexities of our daily lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the job market, stock market, and tax season. But amidst the chaos, it’s essential to take a step back and assess the state of our hearts.

A Surplus of Selfishness

Our son Charley once had a profound conversation with God about his “balance sheet.” It’s a concept we can all relate to. When we take an honest look at our hearts, we often find a surplus of selfishness and a desire for instant gratification. We crave control and want things our way, right now. But this surplus comes at a great cost – a shortage of obedience and love for God.

A Cry for Help

Heavenly Father, I confess that I haven’t been loving You as I should. My selfishness and disobedience are evident, even if only to me. I need Your help to bankrupt my surplus of selfishness and replace it with a deep and growing love for You. Teach me to know You and keep my mind focused on eternal things, not fleeting earthly desires.

A Heartfelt Prayer

God, I feel small and needy, infinitely more in need of You than You are of me. Yet, You chose me before I knew You, and that’s a remarkable truth. Hold on to me, keep me in Your love, and guide me in Your will. Help me to live for You today, valuing every moment You give me. I want to spend my time doing things of eternal value, not storing up treasures on earth or indulging in selfish pursuits.

A Declaration of Dependence

You are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my refuge, and my shield. With You by my side, I have nothing to fear. Your perfect love for me is more than I could ever earn or deserve. Thank You, Father, for Your unwavering love and guidance. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
