Unforgettable Moments on the Water
As I reflect on a memorable fishing trip with my three-year-old daughter Christy, I’m reminded of the joy that comes from sharing life’s simple pleasures with loved ones. We were jigging for cod, but our hook got caught on the ocean floor. As I tugged on the line, I felt it release, only to discover we’d snagged something unexpected – a soft, long, and round sea cucumber.
Christy’s face lit up with excitement as I pulled our unusual catch into the boat. I explained to her that sea cucumbers grow on the ocean floor, and her curiosity was palpable. When we returned home, she burst into the house, eager to share our adventure with her mom. But before doing so, she turned to me with an inquisitive tone, asking, “Dad, what kind of pickle was it we caught?”
A Lesson from the Bible
This experience reminded me of the story in Luke chapter five, where Jesus instructed a group of fishermen to cast their nets on the other side of the boat. Despite their initial skepticism, they obeyed and were astonished by the abundance of fish they caught. These fishermen would eventually become Jesus’ disciples, tasked with spreading the Gospel to others.
The Thrill of the Catch
There’s no greater joy than witnessing someone’s face light up with excitement when they encounter the life-changing reality of the Gospel. As we embark on a new year, I pray that we’ll be receptive to Jesus’ guidance, willing to set our “nets” where He directs us. May our efforts be fruitful, and may we have to call upon others to help us bring in the harvest.
A Prayer for the Year Ahead
“Lord, I pray that when You speak, we will listen, leaving our doubts and fears behind. Help us to set our nets where You tell us to, and fill them to overflowing. May we have to call upon our partners to help us bring in the catch. Amen.”
May this year be filled with unforgettable moments, both on and off the water.
