Embracing Our True Identity
In a world where definitions are often shaped by external forces, it’s essential to revisit the question: Who or what gives meaning to my life? Jesus’ words in John 17:16, paraphrased by Eugene Peterson, offer a profound insight: “They are not of the world even as I am not of it.” This statement challenges us to examine the sources that define our character and essence.
The World’s Influence
We frequently hear the term “well-defined” used to describe physical features, plans, and goals. But have we stopped to consider what it truly means to be defined? To define means to establish the character or essence of a person or thing. In our lives, who or what is shaping our identity? Is it the world around us, or is it something more profound?
A Well-Defined Christian
Jesus’ life serves as a powerful example of a well-defined Christian. He didn’t condemn the culture, nor did he seek power within it. Instead, he lived harmoniously amidst discord, embodying the spirit of Jeremiah’s message to Jewish exiles. Jesus “made himself at home and worked for the country’s welfare” (Jeremiah 29:4-7, The Message), demonstrating that it’s possible to thrive in a culture without being defined by it.
Our Purpose
Jesus didn’t intend for us to be removed from the world; rather, he planted us here to reflect his grace and love. We are called to be salt and light in a culture that often doesn’t recognize its own thirst and darkness. Imagine if our character was so Christ-like that it stunned those around us into silence or sparked questions about our faith.
Becoming Well-Defined
As we strive to develop the characteristics of Christ, we can become beacons of hope in our world. We can resemble the tastiest food on a banquet table – observable and deeply desired. So, let’s seek ways to be well-defined, embracing our true identity in Christ.
A Prayer for Courage
Father, living in my culture can be intimidating. I want to hide in a safe corner with like-minded friends, protected from the surrounding dangers. But you, in accordance with the prayer of your Son, protect me and give me the commission to live into my world with the good news of Christ and the power of your Holy Spirit.
