The Heart of the Matter
When it comes to our deepest desires, where do we place our treasure? As Matthew 6:21 reminds us, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” This profound truth was brought to life during a casual conversation with my friend Jan in a cozy cafe.
Dreaming Big
We sat sipping our coffee, imagining our ideal homes and locations. Jan, not a fan of cooking, envisioned a compact kitchen with only the essentials: a microwave and a small refrigerator. I, on the other hand, longed for a charming cottage by the eastern United States sea-coast, surrounded by a picturesque white fence. Our fantasies were vivid, and we reveled in the excitement of possibility.
Reality Check
Fast-forward to the present, and our lives have taken different turns. Jan now resides in a quaint home on the outskirts of a bustling metropolis, while I live in a suburban condominium thousands of miles from the sea. Have our dreams been left unfulfilled? Not necessarily. We’ve both found satisfaction in our current lives, despite the challenges that come with them. Jan still doesn’t cook much, but she has a full-sized kitchen at her disposal! We’ve learned to appreciate the occasional seaside getaway, which partially satisfies our longing for the ocean.
The Danger of Distraction
While it’s harmless to collect fabric swatches, house plans, and paint chips for our dream homes, we must be cautious not to let these desires overshadow our pursuit of God’s plans for us. As Colossians 3:2 urges, “Set your hearts on things above.” When we focus too intently on our own aspirations, we risk diverting from God’s best for us.
A Heartfelt Prayer
Dear Father, help me stay focused on your grand plans for my life. Keep me attuned to your heart, and my own desires will naturally fall into place. May I never lose sight of what truly matters.
