Raising Resilient Children in a Secular World
As parents, we strive to shield our children from the negative influences of a self-absorbed culture. However, in doing so, are we inadvertently raising fragile saplings instead of sturdy oaks? The Bible reminds us that those who trust in the Lord will be like a tree planted by the water, unafraid of heat or drought, and always bearing fruit (Jeremiah 17:7-8).
The Allure of Forbidden Fruit
Children are naturally drawn to things they’re told to avoid. We’ve all seen toddlers test boundaries, reaching for the hot oven door or sharp knife as soon as our backs are turned. Instead of simply prohibiting certain activities, what if we engaged with our children in a more intentional way?
Guiding Our Children Through Questionable Content
Imagine reading a controversial book together, watching a questionable movie or TV show, and then discussing its themes in the context of our faith. This approach would allow us to guide our children’s understanding and help them develop critical thinking skills. After all, first-century Christians, including children, faced persecution and hardship, yet they remained faithful.
Supporting Our Children in a Challenging World
While it’s essential to nurture our children when they’re young, we must also teach them to withstand the challenges of life. Just as trees need to weather storms to grow strong, our children need to learn to navigate difficult situations to become resilient. As parents, we must find the balance between protection and empowerment.
A Prayer for Wisdom
Lord, I want to protect my children from harm, but I know that’s not always possible. Help me to know when to intervene and when to let them learn from their mistakes. Teach me how to guide them so they can develop the strength and character to face whatever life throws their way.
