Beyond Mortality: A Life of Eternal Purpose

Embracing the Reality of Heaven

As we journey through life, we often find ourselves pondering the mysteries of eternity. The Bible reminds us that when Christ is revealed, we will see Him and become like Him (1 John 3:2). This profound truth was recently brought to life through the remarkable story of a dear friend, Susan, who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.

A Life of Unwavering Faith

Susan’s unwavering faith was a beacon of hope to all who knew her. Even in the darkest moments, her heart remained steadfast, shining brightly with a radiant smile. During my last visit with her, just two weeks before her passing, I was struck by her selflessness. Her first question was about God’s work in my life, demonstrating her unwavering concern for others. Despite her frailty, she continued to minister to those around her, including the kitchen staff who sought to improve their English skills.

A Heart of Love and Compassion

Susan’s love for others was evident in every aspect of her life. She spoke daily with her mother, who struggled with senile dementia, offering words of comfort and reassurance. Her heart went out to her husband, who was shouldering the burden of her care, and she asked us to pray for his strength and endurance. Even in the face of her own mortality, Susan’s focus remained on others, a testament to her Christ-like character.

The Reality of Heaven

When Susan finally breathed her last, I have no doubt that she was overwhelmed with joy at the sight of her Savior. For her, heaven was not a surprise, but a culmination of a life lived in the presence of Jesus. She had been becoming like Him for years, and her transition to eternity was merely a continuation of that journey.

A Prayer for Us All

As I reflect on Susan’s remarkable life, I am reminded of the importance of living each day with eternity in mind. May we, too, look longingly at God each day, seeking to live increasingly like Him. When we finally see Him face to face, may we not be surprised, but overcome with joy, knowing that we have lived a life that honored Him.
