A Surprising Lesson from a Fortune Cookie
I recently had a movie night with a friend, complete with Chinese takeout and, of course, fortune cookies. As I cracked open my cookie, I was expecting a cheesy phrase or words of wisdom. But instead, I found nothing. No fortune, no message, just an empty cookie. At first, I felt a little shortchanged.
The Idolatry of Everyday Habits
But then I realized that God was teaching me a valuable lesson. As Christians, we’re called to worship only the Triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first and second commandments remind us to have no other gods before Him and not to worship idols. While we may not bow down to ancient deities, idolatry can still creep into our lives in subtle ways.
The Insidious Nature of Superstition
Do you read your horoscope in the newspaper? Do you avoid walking under ladders or shun black cats? These habits may seem harmless, but they can chip away at our faith, creating tiny cracks that let in temptation. Each time we turn our attention away from God’s control over our lives, we’re opening ourselves up to spiritual attack.
The Jealousy of God
God is a jealous God, desiring our complete reliance on Him. He wants us to remember that He is Lord over our lives, our thoughts, and our actions. When we seek guidance from fortune cookies, horoscopes, or superstitions, we’re essentially saying that God’s Word is not enough.
A Call to Rely on God’s Word
Jesus taught us not to be anxious about our futures, but to seek first the righteousness of God (Matthew 6). The next time you’re tempted to seek guidance from a fortune cookie or horoscope, remember that God’s Word is all you need. Will you pray for another empty cookie, a reminder that your Lord is all you need?
A Question to Ponder
What are you relying on instead of God’s Word? Take a moment to reflect on your habits and traditions. Are there areas where you’re seeking guidance from sources other than God?
