Weathering Life’s Turbulent Storms
When fear grips our hearts, our natural response is to either fight or flee. But what if we’re trapped in a stormy situation, with no clear escape route? The disciples faced a similar dilemma when their boat was battered by fierce winds and waves. Despite Jesus’ presence, they felt helpless and unsure if he could save them.
The Illusion of Control
In the face of danger, our instincts tell us to take action. We might try to outrun the storm, seeking shelter or safety. But sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we can’t escape the turmoil. The storm’s power can be overwhelming, threatening to destroy our sense of calm and security.
A Choice to Make
In such moments, we have a choice: to try to navigate the storm alone or to turn to Jesus, who is always present with us. The disciples struggled with this decision, unsure if Jesus was aware of their plight or cared about their safety. But Jesus’ response would reveal his true nature and power.
The King’s Goodness
As Lucy asked Mr. Beaver in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, “Is Jesus safe?” Can we trust him to guide us through life’s turbulent storms? Mr. Beaver’s response echoes through the ages: “Safe? Don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
Trusting the King
Who’s in your boat when the storms of life rage on? Will you survive the present turmoil? The answer lies in trusting the one true, good king, Jesus. He has the power to calm the wind and waves, bringing peace to our troubled hearts.
A Prayer for Trust
Jesus, you have power over the storms that rage in my life. I don’t. I need you in my boat! Please show me how to trust you, even when it seems like you’re asleep and uncaring, and don’t hear my prayers for help. Amen.
Calm in the Chaos
Today, when fear or panic starts to overwhelm you, remember that you can’t calm the storm yourself. Instead, call out to Jesus. He will respond, and he has the power to bring peace to the turbulent waters that threaten to swamp your boat.
