Unleashing the Power of Witness: Breaking Free from Fear to Fulfill Your Mission

Unleashing the Power of Witness

The Moment of Truth

As we reflect on Acts 1:1-11, we’re reminded of John Ortberg’s inspiring book, “If You Want to Walk on Water, You Have to Get Out of the Boat.” Although the title references Peter’s attempt to walk on water, it also resonates with the apostles’ experience after Jesus’ ascension. As they gazed intently into the sky, Jesus’ parting words echoed in their minds: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (v8).

Paralyzed by Fear

Yet, instead of taking action, the apostles stood frozen, unsure of what to do without Jesus. Haven’t we all been there? God’s instructions are clear, but fear, doubt, and uncertainty hold us back. The apostles had left everything behind to follow Jesus, and now He was gone. Their inaction prompted two angels to appear, urging them to stop gazing into the sky and focus on their mission.

A Promise of Return

The angels’ words brought comfort and reassurance: “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven” (v11). This promise sparked a newfound confidence in the apostles, and they responded by worshiping Jesus and returning to Jerusalem with great joy (Luke 24:52).

A Call to Action

So, what about us? Are we standing still, staring into the sky, or are we actively living out Jesus’ command to be witnesses to the ends of the earth? What’s holding us back from being an active witness? It’s time to re-examine our priorities and refocus on our mission. As Luke 12:12 reminds us, “The Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”

Breaking Free from Inaction

If your spiritual life has felt stagnant lately, it’s time to rediscover the passion and purpose of the early Christian servants. You are more ready than you realize to make a difference. So, what’s holding you back? Take the first step, and let the Holy Spirit guide you. Start witnessing today!
