A Heart of Unconditional Love
I still remember the heart-wrenching call from my dear friend, her voice trembling as she shared the news about her son’s hospitalization. The pain and anguish were palpable, and my heart went out to her. My friend has been living with an incredibly challenging situation, one that would break many people. Yet, every time I see her, I’m reminded of God’s grace and love in her life and in the life of her son.
Choosing to Love
Seven years ago, my friend and her husband made a selfless decision to love a young boy who wasn’t their own. They welcomed him into their family, giving him all the privileges of a son – love, care, family vacations, and most importantly, the opportunity to learn about God’s love. This boy was given the same rights as their own child, just as God has adopted us as His own children, giving us the same privileges as His Son, Jesus.
The Struggle to Accept Love
However, this journey has not been easy. My friend would attest that it’s the hardest thing she’s ever done. The boy, despite being given this incredible gift of love, struggles to accept it. His past experiences have left deep scars, making it difficult for him to embrace the love and warmth of his new family. He’s built walls around his heart, fearing that love will break down his defenses.
A Reflection of Ourselves
As I watch this young boy struggle, I see myself reflected in him. Why do I, too, often resist God’s unconditional love? I’m drawn to it, but then I pull away, fearing that it will expose my innermost being. Why do I allow fear to keep me from fully enjoying God’s incredible love?
A Hero of Unconditional Love
My friend, on the other hand, is a hero of unconditional love. She has given everything for her son, loving him without expecting anything in return. Despite the pain and heartache, she continues to demonstrate God’s love and patience every day. In her weakness, I see her strength in God growing, and in her brokenness, I’ve seen God bring her unspeakable joy.
God’s Lavished Love
As I reflect on my friend’s love for her son, I’m reminded of God’s lavish love for me. “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1, NIV). God’s love is not based on our performance or worthiness; it’s a gift, freely given to us.
Knowing Jesus
If you’re struggling to understand God’s love, I invite you to know Jesus personally. You can have peace, hope, and forgiveness through a personal relationship with Him. Simply talk to God, and He will meet you where you are. Here’s a suggested prayer:
“Lord Jesus, I want to know You personally. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life to You and ask You to come in as my Savior and Lord. Take control of my life. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Bring peace to my world this Christmas. Make me the kind of person You want me to be. Amen.”
