Diving Deeper: Embracing the Uncomfortable Path to Spiritual Growth and Intimacy with God

Embracing the Uncomfortable Path to Spiritual Growth

As I reflect on my relationship with God, I’m reminded of the vast ocean that represents my Christian journey. The horizon stretches out before me, symbolizing eternity. The gentle waves wash over my feet, a comforting reminder of God’s presence. Yet, I’m aware that the tide is constantly shifting, beckoning me to venture deeper into the unknown.

The Call to Deny Self

In Luke 9:23, Jesus presents a radical challenge to His followers: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” This counter-cultural declaration is both unsettling and liberating. It’s a call to surrender our lives, our desires, and our very selves to Him. In a world that celebrates self-promotion and individualism, Jesus’ words seem unreasonable, even impossible. But He reassures us that if we lose our life for Him, we will ultimately save it.

The Fear of the Deep

So, why do we hesitate to take the plunge? Why do we settle for the safety of the shoreline, content with stagnant belief? The answer lies in our fear of the unknown, our fear of losing control, and our fear of dying to self. But Jesus promises that if we’re willing to take the risk, we’ll discover a depth of intimacy and life in Him that we never thought possible.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Wisdom

Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer echoes Jesus’ call, saying, “When Christ calls a man, He bids him come and die.” This is not a call to physical death, but to a death of our old selves, our pride, and our selfish desires. It’s a call to surrender, to obey, and to trust in God’s goodness.

Stepping into the Deep

So, how do we practically die to self? It begins with obedience, risk, and a willingness to step into the unknown. It means surrendering our need for control, our desire for comfort, and our fear of the deep. As we take this step of faith, Jesus reassures us that we’ll find life, true life, in Him.

A Prayer for Intimacy

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the privilege of knowing You. Reveal to me the areas of my life where I’m holding back, where I’m clinging to self. Empower me to step off the shore of comfort and into the deep, where I can experience Your presence, Your love, and Your life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
