The Majesty of God’s Creation
As we gaze up at the starry night sky, it’s awe-inspiring to consider the sheer scale of God’s creation. A recent study has revealed that our Milky Way galaxy is home to at least 17 billion planets similar in size to Earth – that’s more than two Earth-size planets for every person on the planet!
A Celestial Showcase
Imagine lying on your back on a cloudless night, far from the glow of city lights, with a total lunar eclipse as the perfect backdrop. The darkness is so profound that you can’t see your hand in front of your face, yet the heavens are ablaze with a dazzling display of stars. This was my experience at a game preserve in South Africa, and it left me breathless. The words of Psalm 8:9 echoed in my mind: “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.”
The Shepherd’s Perspective
David, the shepherd-king, must have had a similar experience, sitting on a Judean hillside, surrounded by his flock, and gazing up at the celestial showcase. He wrote in Psalm 147:4, “He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them.” As I struggled to comprehend the vastness of what I saw, I realized that only a Creator could bring such beauty into being.
A Humbling Reflection
David’s meditation on the heavens led him to ponder the majesty of God’s power and ask, “What is man that you are mindful of him?” Have you ever looked up at the stars and wondered why God bothers with us? It’s a humbling reflection, yet one that fills us with gratitude. God is mindful of us, thinking about us, and caring for us. In the grand scheme of creation, God’s passion is not for planets, but for people.
The Innermost Place
The glory of God is not ultimately seen in the vastness of creation, but in His passion for us! The God of the universe is the God of the innermost place in our hearts. As we marvel at the stars, let us remember that God’s majesty is not limited to the celestial realm, but is also present in the depths of our own hearts.
