The Power of Commitment
As I reflect on my journeys across the globe, I’m reminded of the countless individuals I’ve met who spoke little to no English. Despite the language barriers, I’ve noticed a peculiar trend – the overuse of the word “yes.” It’s as if, when faced with a question, the default response is an affirmative, even if the person has no idea what’s being asked.
The Folly of Empty Promises
I can’t help but wonder if God feels the same frustration when I respond to Him with a hasty “yes,” only to neglect my commitments. Perhaps I’m guilty of not fully understanding His will or, worse still, deliberately choosing not to follow through. The weight of my inaction bears down on me, especially when I recall the countless opportunities I’ve squandered to share the Gospel with others.
A Prayer for Authenticity
This week, I pray that you and I would stand in reverence before God, carefully considering the vows we make to Him. May we not delay in fulfilling our promises, recognizing that He takes no pleasure in empty commitments. It’s better to refrain from making vows altogether than to risk incurring His displeasure by failing to follow through.
The Dangers of Thoughtless Words
Let us be mindful of the words we speak, lest they lead us down a path of sin. May we not protest to God, “My vow was a mistake,” and thereby undermine the very work of our hands. Instead, let us heed the wisdom of Ecclesiastes 5:4-7, which reminds us that “much dreaming and many words are meaningless.” May our words be infused with intention and our actions be guided by a deep reverence for God. Amen.
