A Lesson in Leadership and Trust
As the seasons change, a story from a remote South Dakota reservation comes to mind. The new chief, unfamiliar with the old ways, was asked by his people to predict the coming winter’s severity. He took a practical approach, consulting the National Weather Service for guidance. With each call, the forecast remained unchanged: a very cold winter was expected. The chief’s people worked tirelessly to collect firewood, preparing for the worst.
Seeking Wisdom
But what drove the chief’s decisions? Was it the wisdom of the weather service or something more? As we enter a new year, it’s essential to reflect on our sources of guidance. Who or what do we rely on for leadership and advice? Where do we place our trust?
A Call to Sincerity
While many make New Year’s resolutions, often broken within weeks, I challenge you to focus on these fundamental questions. Take a moment to honestly assess your sources of wisdom. Are you seeking guidance from the right places? Are you serving the right leader? Are you trusting in the right source?
A Timeless Lesson
Joshua’s words still resonate today: “Choose you this day whom ye will serve…but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:2, 15). The Psalmist reminds us, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God” (Psalm 20:7). As we move forward, may we prioritize seeking wisdom from the right sources, trusting in the right leader, and serving with sincerity.
A New Year’s Reflection
In the coming year, take time to reflect on your priorities. Ask yourself: Who am I serving? Where do I place my trust? What sources of wisdom do I rely on? By answering these questions with honesty and integrity, you’ll find that the day-to-day decisions will take care of themselves.
