Lifelong Praise: A Journey of Faith
From Sunday to Monday
As I sat comfortably in a recent worship service, the words to the praise songs flowed easily off my lips. The melodies, accompanied by grand organ or rhythmic brass, strings, and drums, filled my heart with the promise of unending praise to the God I love and promise to serve. But then, a striking contrast came to mind – the crowd on Palm Sunday, shouting “Hosanna to the Son of David!” with enthusiasm and expectation.
A Savior Who Didn’t Meet Expectations
Those faithful followers of God had longed for a savior to overcome their oppressors, but Jesus’ teachings were often obscure and didn’t resonate with triumph. He asked for self-denial and giving to others, which didn’t align with their expectations. They were swayed by those who seemed to have all the answers, and eventually, they cried out, “Crucify him!”
The Reality of Monday Morning
Singing on Sunday morning is far different from living on Monday in the classroom, office, or field. When life takes an unexpected turn – a friend falls into a coma, unemployment stretches on, or children stray from the path – our praise can quickly fade. It’s easy to praise God when everything is going well, but what about when circumstances seem anything but “praiseworthy”?
Practicing Lifelong Praise
The Apostle Paul’s command is clear: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). This is the key to ensuring our praise will be lifelong. It’s a daily choice to focus on God’s goodness, even in the midst of uncertainty and hardship.
A Heartfelt Prayer
Father, forgive me for the short shelf life of my praise. Teach me more about daily praise, even when circumstances seem difficult. Help me to rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances, so that my praise may be a lifelong reflection of my love and commitment to you.
