Unmasking the Deceiver’s Tactics
Jesus’ words in Matthew 28:18-19 are a familiar reminder of our mission to make disciples. However, it’s the preceding twelve words that hold a profound truth: “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.’” This declaration is a game-changer in our understanding of spiritual warfare.
The Power Vacuum
When we grasp that all authority belongs to God, we realize that Satan has zero authority. None. Zilch. This shatters the illusion that Satan has some power, no matter how small. His only weapon is deception, and he wields it with precision.
The Lies That Bind
Satan’s tactics are diverse and insidious. He attacks our:
- Identity: “My work doesn’t matter. I’m a screw-up.”
- Abilities: “I could never do that.”
- Attitude: “I don’t have to forgive her, do you know what she did to me?”
- Perception of God: “God has forgotten me. God could never forgive that.”
These lies may not be true, but when we internalize them, we live as if they are. We give them power, making choices based on false information.
Fighting Fire with Scripture
We can’t combat thoughts with thoughts alone. We need to fight lies with words – specifically, God’s words. When Satan whispers deceit, we must respond with scripture. This is where true freedom lies. Identify the lie that Satan uses to undermine you, and arm yourself with a countering verse.
Guarding Your Heart
Satan targets our deepest insecurities and darkest secrets. Be aware of his tactics and prepare a defense. What is the worst lie Satan tells you? Which scripture can you wield against it? Write it down and keep it close, ready to deploy when needed.
The Liberating Truth
Satan has no power, not even a shred. His only arsenal is deception. But when we speak truth in the face of his lies, we render them powerless. Isn’t that wonderful news?
A Prayer for Discernment
Father, teach me to guard my heart. Help me distinguish between your gentle voice of conviction and Satan’s deceitful whispers. Give me the courage to speak your truth, reminding me that my worth, value, redemption, and eternity are secure in your hands. Amen.
