Empowered for Mission
As we reflect on the encounter between Jesus and his disciples after his resurrection, we’re met with a profound sense of joy, power, and security. The disciples’ rejoicing wasn’t just a fleeting emotional response; it was a deep-seated assurance that they were not alone in their mission.
A General’s Briefing
Imagine a seasoned military leader addressing his troops before deploying them into battle. Jesus’ words to his disciples echo this sentiment: “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” This declaration wasn’t just a pep talk; it was a commissioning, empowering them to carry out their mission with the same authority and power that Jesus himself possessed.
The Source of Power
Jesus reminds his disciples that they’re not operating on their own strength but are sent by the same power that sent him. This realization is both humbling and liberating. As Christians, we must recognize that we’ve received this same power through Christ and are dispatched on the same mission.
A Model for Ministry
The Great Commission, as it’s known, is a fundamental tenet of Christian theology. It emphasizes the importance of ministry, missionary work, evangelism, and baptism. The apostles, dispersed from Jerusalem, founded the worldwide church, setting a precedent for us to follow today. We’re compelled to go, to witness, to plant churches, and to make disciples.
Guided by the Trinity
As we embark on this mission, we’re not alone. Jesus walks beside us, the Holy Spirit guides us from within, and God watches over us from above. Our journey begins in our neighborhoods, our towns, and extends to the ends of the earth. We’re called to share the Good News and the saving Word of the Risen Lord with everyone we encounter.
A Call to Action
So, let’s rise to the challenge. With the power of the Holy Spirit and the guidance of our Triune God, let’s spread the teachings of Christ to all nations. Let’s make disciples, plant churches, and witness to the world around us. The mission begins now.
