Prioritizing God: The Key to Eternal Life
A chance encounter between Jesus and a wealthy young man offers a profound lesson on what it truly means to follow God. The young ruler, eager to secure eternal life, asked Jesus what he needed to do to achieve it. Jesus’ response was unexpected: “Sell everything you have, give to the poor, and then come follow me.” The young man’s hesitation revealed a deeper issue – his inability to surrender his wealth and pride to God.
The Heart of the Matter
Jesus’ words were not a condemnation of wealth or a call to poverty. Rather, they highlighted the importance of prioritizing God above all else. As Jesus taught, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart…” (Matthew 22:37-40). This commandment emphasizes the need to focus on God, rather than our own efforts or possessions.
A Lesson in Humility
The rich young ruler’s mistake was common: he believed he could earn eternal life through his own achievements. However, this approach is misguided. Eternal life is not something we can attain through hard work or self-effort. As Ephesians 2:8,9 reminds us, “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not of works, so that no one can boast.”
God’s Gift of Eternal Life
The good news is that eternal life is available to all, regardless of wealth or social status. It is a gift from God, received through faith in Jesus Christ. As we acknowledge our limitations and surrender our lives to God, we can experience the joy and freedom that comes with prioritizing Him above all else.
A Heartfelt Response
May we respond to God’s call with humility and gratitude, recognizing that eternal life is not something we can earn, but rather a gift we receive through faith. Thank you, Father, for offering eternal life to all people, regardless of their background or circumstances. May we prioritize You above all else, and follow Jesus with hearts full of love and devotion.
