Life’s Unexpected Turns: A Lesson in Awareness
As parents of 3-and-a-half-year-old twin boys, they thought they had everything under control when expecting their next child. But life had other plans. With labor rapidly progressing, they hastily gathered their sons and headed to the sitter’s house, then to the hospital. However, their plans were derailed when the mother’s water broke en route to the sitter’s. The situation became even more frantic when they got pulled over by the police while speeding to the hospital.
A Surprising Twist
The male officer was taken aback when the husband explained the situation, but his female partner quickly grasped the urgency and sent them on their way. With no time to spare, they skipped the sitter’s and rushed to the hospital. As the medical team worked to deliver their new baby, the twin boys were engrossed in watching TV in the birthing suite. In a humorous moment, one of the boys turned to his mom and whispered, “Shh, Mom! We’re trying to watch TV!”
Missing the Miraculous
This innocent remark struck a chord. How often do we, like that 3-year-old, miss the incredible things God is doing around us because we’re too distracted or disconnected from Him? Not only do we miss out on something remarkable, but we might even feel annoyed with God for disrupting our plans. We need to have our eyes opened to the divine work unfolding around us, just like Elisha’s servant in the biblical account.
A Lesson from Elisha’s Servant
When surrounded by enemy forces, Elisha’s servant panicked, but the prophet reassured him, “Don’t be afraid… Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” And God revealed the hills filled with horses and chariots of fire, protecting them. This powerful scene reminds us to stay aware of God’s presence and activity in our lives.
A Prayer for Awareness
My heartfelt prayer today is, “God, help me stay focused on You. Open my eyes to Your work, to the miraculous, and keep me from being distracted by life’s chaos.” May we all cultivate a deeper sense of awareness, recognizing God’s hand at work in our lives, even in the most unexpected moments.
