It can manifest physically, too, tightening our jaw muscles, tensing our lower back, and disrupting our sleep patterns. So, why do we often cling to it so fiercely?
The Story of Jonah: A Cautionary Tale
Jonah’s anger was all-consuming – directed at the people of Nineveh, God, and even the withering of a plant that had provided him shade. His bitter disposition had soured his outlook on life, and God took notice. Was Jonah’s anger justified? The Bible teaches us that God is compassionate and slow to anger, two qualities that go hand in hand. When compassion flows in, anger is pushed out, shifting our focus from our own feelings to the needs of others.
The Fine Line Between Righteous and Unrighteous Anger
There is a distinction between righteous and unrighteous anger. While God can become angry, His anger is not driven by emotions like jealousy, revenge, or hurt. Instead, it prompts a call to action, seeking to right a wrong and turn a negative into a positive. Paul’s wisdom in Ephesians 4:26 serves as a reminder: “In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry…”
Breaking Free from the Shackles of Anger
Dear Lord, I pray that You will help me release any feelings of anger in my heart. May I not be held captive by these emotions, but instead, see others with compassion, just as You do. Amen.
By embracing compassion and letting go of anger, we can begin to see the world through a different lens – one that is shaped by love, empathy, and understanding.
