When Fear Overwhelms, Faith Takes Over
In the face of overwhelming odds, where do we turn for help? The ancient story of Jehoshaphat, as recorded in 2 Chronicles, offers a powerful lesson in trust and surrender.
A Perfect Storm of Fear
The Moabites, a formidable force, had formed a powerful alliance with surrounding nations, marching against Jehoshaphat’s kingdom. It was a military nightmare, with multiple armies converging on a single target. The Jews, capable of handling one army, were no match for this combined force. Fear and uncertainty gripped their hearts.
A Cry for Help
In desperation, Jehoshaphat turned to God, praying, “We have no power… nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You!” (2 Chronicles 20:12). This heartfelt cry acknowledged their limitations and dependence on a higher power.
God’s Response: Fear Not!
God’s reassuring answer came swiftly, “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s!” (vs.15). In essence, God was saying, “I’ve got this. Trust me to fight on your behalf.”
The God of the Ages at Work
In times of anxiety and fear, we can draw strength from Jehoshaphat’s story. Our God is always near, ready to intervene on our behalf. When we acknowledge our limitations and surrender to His power, we can expect to see Him work in mighty ways.
Faith in Action
As we face our own perfect storms of fear and uncertainty, let us remember Jehoshaphat’s courageous example. May our eyes be fixed on God, trusting in His goodness and sovereignty. For in the end, it is not our power or might that saves us, but the mighty hand of our loving God.
