Unlocking the Power of God’s Spirit
As we navigate the complexities of life, it’s essential to understand what God’s will is for us. A crucial aspect of this understanding is recognizing the dangers of being controlled by external influences, such as alcohol, and instead, embracing the empowering presence of God’s Spirit.
A Personal Encounter
I still remember the night before my final exams when I let my guard down and got drunk. As a first-year university student, I had always avoided alcohol, but my roommate’s persistence won me over. The effects were immediate and profound – my words, actions, and perception of the world around me were altered, and I was no longer in control.
The Contrast of Control
This experience highlights the stark contrast between being “drunk with wine” and being “filled with God’s Spirit.” The Bible teaches us that these two states are mutually exclusive, and the choice we make has far-reaching consequences. When we allow alcohol or other external influences to control us, we open ourselves up to foolish and destructive behavior. On the other hand, being directed and empowered by God’s Spirit brings about transformative changes in our lives.
The Fruit of the Spirit
The Bible describes these changes as the fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). As I reflected on my experience, I realized that I had been limiting God’s work in my life by not surrendering all areas to His control. I had invited God into my academic pursuits, but not into my social life. It was time to acknowledge that God is better equipped to guide me in every aspect of my life.
Surrendering Control
From the moment of our spiritual birth, God’s Spirit resides within us, but we can restrict His work by not surrendering to His guidance. The key is to allow God to direct and empower each area of our lives by inviting the Holy Spirit to fill us. So, I ask you: what are you being filled with? Are you allowing God’s Spirit to transform your life, or are you still clinging to control?
A Prayer of Surrender
Father, I confess that I have been trying to control my life, and my self-effort has robbed me of Your wisdom and power. I surrender my need for control and invite Your Spirit to direct and empower every area of my life. I long to see the fruit of Your Spirit produced in my life. Thank You for Your love and forgiveness. Amen.
