Rediscovering Purpose and Faith

As I stood before the staff of a prominent Christian media organization, I was tasked with answering a profound question: why do we exist? The theme, “Why CTI?” (Christianity Today Institute), was more than just a introspective exercise; it was an invitation to explore the very essence of their purpose.

I turned to Matthew 8, where a Roman Centurion’s encounter with Jesus offers a powerful lesson. The Centurion, a man of authority and conviction, approaches Jesus with a simple yet profound request: “Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.” These words echo with faith and trust, unencumbered by doubt or hesitation.

A Model of Unwavering Faith

Jesus is taken aback by the Centurion’s unwavering confidence. Unlike many of the faithful he has encountered, this pagan, this “man of the world,” doesn’t require proof or credentials. He simply believes that Jesus’ words have the power to transform reality. This unshakeable faith is a model for us all, a reminder that our words, when spoken with integrity and authority, can bring about real change.

A Challenge to Communicators

As I shared this story with the gathering of journalists and publishers, I issued a challenge: write and speak with truthfulness, clarity, and conviction. Believe in the One who has called you, who is with you, and who is faithful to you. By doing so, we can harness the power of our words to raise the dead, heal the sick, and comfort the sorrowing.

A Renewed Commitment

As I walked away from that encounter, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and commitment. I was reminded that, as communicators, we have the power to shape reality through our words. May we, like the Roman Centurion, approach our work with unwavering faith and conviction, trusting that our words can bring about real transformation.
