The Power of Submission in the Christian Life
Submission – a word that can evoke strong emotions and reactions. In today’s culture, we’re often encouraged to question authority and challenge those in leadership. However, the Bible presents a different perspective on submission, one that emphasizes its importance in our relationships with others and with God.
Understanding Biblical Submission
The Bible provides clear commands regarding submission. Wives are called to submit to their husbands as to the Lord (Ephesians 5:22). Civilians are instructed to submit to their governing authorities (Romans 13:1). God’s people are encouraged to submit to their leaders in the church (Hebrews 13:17). Jesus himself modeled submission, praying “Not my will, but yours be done” on the eve of his crucifixion (Luke 22:42).
Submission is Not Weakness
Submission is often misunderstood as a sign of weakness or inability. However, biblical submission is actually a demonstration of strength and dignity. It requires humility, trust, and obedience. When we submit to those in authority over us, we’re not surrendering our autonomy or individuality. Rather, we’re recognizing the value of relationships and the importance of working together for the greater good.
When Submission is Challenged
But what happens when those in authority ask us to do something that goes against our values or biblical principles? The Bible is clear: we should never submit to authorities by following their leadership into sinful actions. Daniel’s refusal to obey King Darius’s command to stop praying is a powerful example of this principle (Daniel 6). Similarly, if a husband were to ask his wife to stop reading the Bible or meeting with God’s people, she would be right to disobey him in order to follow the clear teaching of Scripture (Colossians 3:16; Hebrews 10:25).
Navigating Gray Areas
Sometimes, those in authority may make decisions that are not necessarily sinful but still unwise. In such cases, it’s appropriate to respectfully engage and present our concerns. A wife may disagree with her husband’s decision on schooling for their children, or a church member may question the use of funds. While submission is still important, it’s also essential to communicate our perspectives and work together to find solutions.
Conclusion
Submission is an integral part of the Christian life. By embracing biblical submission, we demonstrate our commitment to relationships, humility, and obedience. As we navigate the complexities of life, may we remember that submission is not weakness but strength, and may we always seek to honor God in our relationships with others.
