The Power of Communion: Understanding the Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper is a sacred ritual that holds a special place in the heart of Christian worship. Yet, for many Protestant Evangelicals, it remains a somewhat enigmatic practice. We may participate in it regularly, but do we truly understand its significance and the rich meaning it embodies?
Why Evangelicals Undervalue Communion
Tim Chester, author of “Truth We Can Touch: How Baptism and Communion Shape Our Lives,” believes that Evangelicals often undervalue the Lord’s Supper. This stems from a historical reluctance to define what the sacraments represent, instead focusing on what they don’t mean. Additionally, the Enlightenment’s emphasis on reason and intellectual understanding has led us to neglect the physical aspects of communion.
The Significance of Physical Elements
Jesus gave us physical elements – bread and wine – to embody the promises, grace, and presence of Christ. These tangible symbols communicate his love in a way that transcends mere intellectual understanding. Just as a husband’s physical touch reinforces his love for his wife, so too does Christ’s presence in the bread and wine reinforce his love for us.
Eating and Drinking in an Unworthy Manner
In 1 Corinthians 11, Paul warns against participating in communion in an unworthy manner. This doesn’t refer to the physical act of eating and drinking, but rather the attitude with which we approach the Lord’s table. Are we ignoring the unity and love we share with our brothers and sisters in Christ? Or are we using the occasion to reinforce social hierarchies and exclusions?
Christ’s Presence in the Elements
Christ is present in the Lord’s Supper by his Spirit, not physically. The bread and wine are not magical objects, but rather symbols that embody his promises and love. As we partake in communion, we are participating in Christ’s presence, hosted by him at his table.
Practical Guidance for Communion
So, what should we do when we take communion? Start by reflecting on your need and how Christ meets that need. Consider how the bread and wine embody his love and presence for you. Be guided by the leader of the communion service, and let the richness of the theme lead your thoughts.
Celebrating Communion Outside of Church
Can we celebrate communion outside of a formal church context? While it’s essential to respect the policies and practices of your local church, it’s not necessarily wrong to celebrate communion in smaller groups or special settings, as long as it’s done under the authority and direction of church leaders.
Addressing Concerns and Misconceptions
Some may feel uneasy about the sacramental language used in communion discussions. However, this language is rooted in Reformed Evangelical traditions and emphasizes the importance of Word and sacrament together. It’s not about overemphasizing the sacraments, but rather understanding their significance in the shared life of God’s people.
By embracing a deeper understanding of the Lord’s Supper, we can experience the richness of Christ’s presence and love in our lives, and cultivate a greater sense of unity and community with our fellow believers.
