Finding Purpose in Our Daily Work
As we go about our daily lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the routine of work and forget about the bigger picture. But what if our work was more than just a means to a paycheck? What if it was an opportunity to serve God and develop our character?
A Story of Faith and Integrity
I recall meeting a man from Hungary who exemplified this concept. He was a mathematics teacher who was also active in his local church, teaching Scripture in his spare time. When faced with the choice between continuing as a school teacher or a Bible teacher, he chose to follow his faith, even though it meant giving up his secure job.
His decision led him to work in a quarry, where he labored in difficult conditions. However, his integrity and work ethic eventually caught the attention of his manager, who offered him a new role teaching mathematics to the foreman. This new position not only brought him greater financial stability but also allowed him to continue serving God in his daily work.
God’s Interest in Our Character
This story highlights an important truth: God is more interested in our character than our possessions. His intention is that our work becomes an integral part of the process of character development. As we go about our daily tasks, we are not just earning a living; we are also developing our moral fiber.
Seeking God’s Rule and Righteousness
Jesus teaches us to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness” in our daily work. This means that our primary motivation should not be financial gain, but rather experiencing God’s rule and righteousness in our lives. When we prioritize this, the necessities of life will be added as well.
The Danger of Misplaced Motivation
However, many people confuse the goal of work with the by-product of work. They prioritize gaining wealth and possessions over developing their character and serving God. This misplaced motivation can lead to dishonesty, corruption, and other forms of moral compromise.
Examples of Integrity in the Workplace
In contrast, the Hungarian man and a young electrician who refused to cut corners on a job demonstrate what it means to seek God’s rule and righteousness in daily work. They show us that our work is not just about earning a living, but about developing our character and serving God.
Conclusion
As we reflect on our own work and motivations, let us remember that God is interested in our character, not just our productivity. May we cultivate the presence of Jesus in our workplaces and see the thorns and thistles of our work in light of the glory that is to come.
