Growing up on a rural homestead, I was the youngest of four siblings, living in a cozy two-bedroom log cabin. Our humble abode was simple, with an outhouse and no phone, but it was filled with warmth from the potbelly wood stove that crackled on cold winter nights. However, the harsh reality of alcoholism cast a shadow over our lives. My mother, a resilient woman who had survived World War II and the Great Depression, was a complex figure – toughened by life’s challenges, yet possessing a gentle side that she rarely revealed.
One memorable night, when I was ill, my mother’s tender touch surprised me. Thinking I was asleep, she softly stroked my hair, a gesture that repeated itself throughout my childhood. This quiet display of affection instilled in me a deeper sense of security and trust in our relationship. As I grew older, I realized that my perception of God’s nature was similarly limited, shaped by a few Bible verses that highlighted His power and majesty.
But then I stumbled upon Isaiah 40:11, which paints a vivid picture of God’s tender care: “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.” This passage, nestled within a description of God’s mighty power, reveals a beautiful snapshot of His gentle side. Similarly, Psalm 18:35 speaks of God’s gentleness in the midst of strength, a profound contrast that brings healing, comfort, and security.
My mother’s tender touch was the first glimpse I had of this divine quality. As I’ve come to understand and experience God’s gentle hand in my life, I’ve found solace, peace, and comfort. Will you allow God to carry you today? If you’re seeking a deeper connection with Him, consider praying this prayer:
“Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make the kind of person You want me to be.”
If you sincerely pray this prayer, you can know that you have a personal relationship with God, who promises to bring you “peace that passes understanding” – a peace that transcends the turmoil of this world.
