Reflecting God’s Goodness in a Broken World: Hope Amidst Tragedy

Reflecting God’s Goodness in a Broken World

As children of God, formed in His own likeness, do we see the world through His eyes? In the creation story of Genesis, God declares His creation as good, a phrase repeated over and over again. But how can we maintain this perspective when the evening news and social media bombard us with evil and suffering?

The Darkness of Human Depravity

Horrific mass shootings, sex slavery, religious persecution, and the bombing of innocent civilians fill our newsfeeds. It’s easy to lose sight of God’s goodness in the face of such tragedy. Yet, as Paul reminds us in Romans, God can bring good out of evil.

The Power of Human Compassion

In the aftermath of tragedy, something remarkable happens. Humans, often at their best, come together to support one another. We see people praying, donating to charities, and embracing their neighbors. The faithful find strength through prayer circles, and witnesses share accounts of miraculous signs and wonders amidst the devastation.

A Glimpse of God’s Goodness

In these moments, God looks on with joy, seeing His creation as good in His image. He delights in our acts of kindness, compassion, and love. As we respond to tragedy with goodness, we reflect God’s character and demonstrate His presence in our lives.

A Prayer for Perspective

Heavenly Father, You created us as good, but sin has corrupted Your perfect design. Help us to seek the good, even in the darkest times, as a sign of Your nearness. Grant us the ability to view the world through Your omnipotent, mercy-filled eyes. We pray this through Jesus, Your Son, whose death makes it possible for us to experience Your goodness. Amen.
