Beyond Mine: Embracing God’s Ownership in Our Lives

The Illusion of Ownership

As we navigate our daily lives, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that what we have is ours alone. We work hard, earn our paychecks, and accumulate possessions, talents, and experiences. But do we ever stop to consider the true source of these blessings?

A Child’s Possessiveness

I recall a scene at a Sunday school class where a three-year-old girl clutched a toy tightly to her chest, declaring, “Mine!” When her teacher asked if she had brought it from home or if it belonged to the church, the child’s response was telling: “It belongs here. But it’s still mine.” This innocent yet revealing exchange made me ponder my own attitude towards what God has given me.

God’s Generosity

The Bible reminds us that “a person can receive only what is given them from heaven” (John 3:27). Every sunrise, every breath, every skill, and every resource is a gift from our gracious Lord. He forgives our sins, provides for our needs, and blesses us abundantly. Yet, do we acknowledge His role in our lives, or do we take credit for our accomplishments?

The Dangers of Greed

When we cling to our possessions, talents, and time as if they are ours alone, we risk falling into the same possessiveness as that three-year-old child. We must recognize that everything we have is on loan from God, and that He can choose to give or take away as He sees fit. The question is, will we willingly share our treasures, or do we need to be reminded that they are not ours to begin with?

Surrendering to God’s Will

Dear Lord, may we remember that all is Yours to give or take away. Thank You for providing so abundantly for us. Help us to release our grip on what we think is ours and offer it back to You to use for Your glory. May we trust You to guide us in how to use our resources, time, and talents for Your purposes.

Reflection

Is there something you are clinging to, claiming it is rightfully yours? Will you surrender it to God and trust Him to direct you on what to do with it?
