Encountering the Living God: From Knowledge to Intimate Experience

Encountering the Living God

As I reflect on my journey with God, I’m reminded of the profound words of Job: “My ears have heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you” (Job 42:5). It’s a powerful reminder that our pursuit of God should be about more than just accumulating knowledge – it’s about experiencing Him intimately.

From Knowledge to Encounter

Dr. J. Packer wisely advises us to transform our knowledge about God into a personal encounter with Him. This requires intentional meditation, prayer, and praise. As I’ve walked with God over the years, He’s not only deepened my understanding of Him but also exposed my misconceptions and biases. The apostle Paul warns us that claiming to know God without demonstrating it through our actions is detestable to Him (Titus 1:16). This convicting truth prompts me to examine my heart: Are my actions and thoughts glorifying God, or are they displeasing to Him?

The Power of Obedience

Recently, while reading about the high priests’ ceremonies, I was struck by the importance of absolute obedience. Thankfully, God’s Holy Spirit empowers us to obey Him. My heart’s desire is to serve Him wholeheartedly. The Bible promises that those who know their God will be strong and accomplish great things (Daniel 11:32). I long for my life to have eternal significance.

A Heart that Sees

Jesus teaches us that the pure in heart will see God (Matthew 5:8). My prayer is that God would reveal any sin in my life, and that I would confess and surrender to His control. I want to be like the faithful servant who multiplied their talents, not the fearful one who buried them. Do you desire to know God intimately? Ask Him to open your eyes to His presence and purify your heart to see Him more clearly.

The Attributes of God

God is love, holy, powerful, good, compassionate, just, sovereign, and wise – all at once. He is the embodiment of these attributes and many more. My prayer is that God would open our eyes to see Him more clearly, and that our hearts would be purified to behold His glory. Amen.
