Follow Jesus Wholeheartedly: Leaving Fear Behind

A Life-Changing Invitation

From Fisherman to Follower

Jesus’ words to Simon Peter in Luke 5:10b-11, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people,” marked a pivotal moment in Peter’s life. It was an invitation that would alter his trajectory forever. But what led up to this moment? Peter had spent the entire night fishing, only to come up empty-handed. Yet, Jesus challenged him to venture into deeper waters, and Peter obeyed. The result was a miraculous catch, filling his nets to the brim.

A Turning Point

I can relate to Peter’s experience. My life was headed in the wrong direction, burdened by the weight of mistakes. A friend encouraged me to take a risk and commit to following Jesus wholeheartedly for three weeks. That decision changed everything. Thirty-three years later, I’m still following Jesus.

Embracing the Call

Peter’s initial hesitation stemmed from feelings of unworthiness. But Jesus reassured him, “Don’t be afraid.” Peter ultimately left everything behind, embracing his new calling. Jesus repurposed Peter’s fishing skills, explaining that he would now be “fishing for people.” This encounter raises a crucial question: Have you responded to Jesus’ invitation to follow Him, or are you trying to fit Him into your existing life?

Discipleship vs. Divided Loyalties

There’s a significant difference between the two approaches. One involves surrendering your life to Jesus, while the other attempts to merge Him into your existing priorities. As followers of Christ, we’re called to a new purpose and set of priorities.

A Heartfelt Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for inviting me to follow You wholeheartedly. Reveal any areas where I’m holding back, and grant me the grace to forsake my own life and prioritize loving You and reaching out to others. Amen.

Starting Your Journey

If you don’t have a relationship with Jesus, you can learn how to begin one. Take the first step towards a life-changing encounter.
