Embracing Courage in the Face of Fear
As we stand at the edge of uncertainty, the darkness of fear can be overwhelming. It’s as if we’re gazing out at a treacherous river, its waters swirling with doubts, hesitations, and timidity. But what if we’re not alone? What if we have a guide who has promised to be with us every step of the way?
A Command to Courage
In Joshua 1:9-11, God issues a bold command: “Be strong and courageous!” It’s a directive that resonates throughout the ages, echoing in our hearts whenever we’re faced with uncertainty. But how do we muster the courage to take that first step into the unknown?
The Physical and Spiritual Challenges
In the story of Joshua, there were two significant obstacles to overcome. The first was physical – the Jordan River was at flood stage, wide, deep, and dangerous. But God intervened, performing a miracle that allowed the people to cross safely. The second challenge was spiritual – the people had to confront their own fears and doubts. They had to wade through the river of fear, trusting that God would be with them every step of the way.
The Only Solution is Courage
In our own lives, we often face similar challenges. We’re called to take that first step into the unknown, to trust that God will guide us through the treacherous waters of fear. It’s a daunting task, but one that requires courage. As Hebrews 12:12 reminds us, “Lift up your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees.”
The Promise of God’s Presence
But we’re not alone in this journey. God has promised to be with us wherever we go (Joshua 1:9). This promise echoes throughout Scripture, reminding us that we’re never abandoned. As Isaiah 43:2 assures us, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… and they will not overwhelm you.”
Gathering Courage
So how do we take that first step into the unknown? How do we gather the courage to face our fears? It begins with recognizing God’s presence in our lives. It begins with trusting that He will guide us through the darkest of times. As Dr. Guy Safford so eloquently prays, “Father, I’m scared of the next step. Help me to gather my courage and find strength in you.”
Finding Strength in God
In the end, it’s not about our own strength or courage, but about trusting in God’s presence and power. As Jesus reminds us, “I am with you even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). So let us take that first step into the unknown, trusting that God will be with us every step of the way.
