Embracing the Uncertainty of a New Year
As we bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new, we’re reminded that the past is behind us and the future lies shrouded in mystery. The world around us is tumultuous, marked by political, moral, financial, and social upheaval. In such uncertain times, it’s natural to feel anxious about what the coming year may bring.
Seeking Refuge in the Almighty
Yet, in the midst of this turmoil, we can find solace in the words of Psalm 91:1-2: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” These verses remind us that our trust should be in God, our refuge and fortress, who is always present and available to guide us through life’s challenges.
The Courage to Stay Close to God
As we navigate the unknown terrain of the new year, we must muster the courage to stay close to God. When we dwell on Him and allow ourselves to draw near, we can rest in His shadow, secure in the knowledge that He is our protection, defense, and hiding place. By doing so, we can approach problems with a sense of calm, rather than anxiety, and avoid getting bogged down in the details.
A Better Way to Face Challenges
Instead of trying to tackle problems head-on, we can take a step back, breathe, and bring our concerns to the Master of the universe. By doing so, we can view our situations in the light of His presence, rather than getting caught up in the anxious way of the world. As Jesus reminds us, “… take heart, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
Praying for Courage and Wisdom
As we face the year ahead, may we be granted the patience of Job, the wisdom of Solomon, and the courage to stand firm in our Christian convictions. May we pray, “Lord God, in the midst of a problem-cluttered world, help me to overcome the world by having the courage to align my heart with you.” Amen.
