The Power of Words: A Double-Edged Sword
The ancient proverb reminds us that our words have the power to bring life or death, and those who wield them wisely will reap the rewards (Proverbs 18:21). We’ve all experienced the devastating impact of careless talk, and conversely, the uplifting effects of encouragement and inspiration.
The Wisdom of the Righteous
So, how do we harness this incredible power? The Bible offers guidance on using our words to build up, rather than tear down. In Proverbs 10, we learn that life-giving words flow from a righteous and wise person. But what does it mean to be righteous and wise? Genesis 15:6 and Proverbs 9:10 reveal that righteousness comes from trusting God, while wisdom is rooted in fearing Him. As believers, when we submit to God’s will and way, we become both righteous and wise.
Speaking with Grace and Salt
In a world where meaningless and hurtful words abound, James and Paul offer valuable advice. James 1:19 urges us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Meanwhile, Colossians 4:6 encourages us to season our conversations with grace and salt, that we might know how to respond to everyone. By doing so, we can speak nourishing truths that uplift and inspire others.
A Prayer for Wisdom
Holy God, grant me understanding of the incredible power of my words. May my conversations be life-giving, and may I speak wise, kind truths that build up others. Spirit of the living God, make me righteous and wise, and speak through me. Amen.
