When Life Gets Foggy
A Sudden Shift
One minute it’s a beautiful day, the next, a thick fog rolls in, obscuring everything in its path. You’re left feeling disoriented, claustrophobic, and desperate to clear the haze. It’s a sensation all too familiar, both in nature and in life.
Foggy Outlook
I’ve experienced those sunny days when everything seems perfect, only to have a situation or circumstance swoop in and shroud my world in uncertainty. Suddenly, my sense of direction vanishes, and my dreams and plans disappear into the fog. I’m not alone. Peter, John, and James faced a similar experience on the mount of transfiguration.
A Lesson from the Mount
In Luke 9:28-36, Jesus takes these three disciples up the mountain to pray. It’s a moment of great privilege, a chance to witness something extraordinary. But as they bask in the glory of the transfiguration, a cloud suddenly overshadows them, casting a blinding fog. Their initial reaction is fear, but then a voice breaks through, reminding them to focus on Jesus, not themselves.
Erasing Self-Oriented Thoughts
In that moment, God teaches them – and us – a valuable lesson. When the fog of uncertainty closes in, we must shift our gaze from our own abilities to the guiding voice of God. It’s not about seeking acknowledgment from Jesus, but about acknowledging Him as our sole source of direction.
Comfort, Correction, and Guidance
Even when we can’t see God through the fog of circumstances, He remains present, ready to comfort, correct, and guide us back to what truly matters – Him. This is the good news: God doesn’t abandon us, even when our faith is clouded.
A Call to Listen
Fogs may obscure our vision, but they won’t last forever. The sun will break through again. In the meantime, let’s stop relying on our own abilities and instead listen for God’s directive voice. When the fog lifts, and we can see again, let’s continue to focus on Jesus alone, just as Peter, James, and John did in verse 36.
The Sun Will Break Through Again
Remember, fogs are temporary, and the sun will shine brightly once more. But until then, let’s learn to navigate the uncertainty, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the One who guides us through life’s foggy moments.
