The Surprising Truth About Earning Your Way to Heaven
When we read Romans 2:6, which says, “God will repay each person according to what they have done,” it can be unsettling. Does this mean we can earn our way into heaven? Thankfully, the answer is no.
The Reality of Sin
Later in Romans 3:23, Paul reminds us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” No matter how hard we try, we can’t live up to God’s standards on our own. Our humanity gets in the way, and even the best of intentions can lead us astray.
The Misconception of Good Deeds
So, what does Paul mean by Romans 2:6? At first glance, it seems to contradict the Gospel. But upon closer inspection, it actually confirms it. Those who try to earn their way to heaven will be judged by their efforts. They may live morally upright lives, give to the poor, and volunteer at the local soup kitchen, but it won’t be enough.
The Power of Confession
On the other hand, those who believe will “have done” something different. We will drop to our knees and confess when we sin. Salvation is a one-time event on the cross, but its effects are ongoing. Jesus deposited His merciful grace in our account, and we must draw it out to pay our debts.
The Futility of Repayment
Here’s the thing: we can’t ever repay God. It’s not about trying to earn our way to heaven; it’s about recognizing our need for Him. So, whose money do you want to receive from that celestial bank – yours or God’s?
The Payday Ahead
Come that glorious and eternal “payday,” how will God repay you? Will you be relying on your own efforts or His gracious gift?
A Prayer of Humility
Heavenly Father, help me always remember I am not supposed to do your will on my own. Keep me humble and ready to confess when my humanness slips in and I slip up. Thank you for depositing your forgiving grace, paid through your Son’s sacrifice, into my account. Amen.
